Northwest Children's Chorus

Northwest Children's Chorus is our district's honor choir. Auditions are open to any NISD 5th grader who sings in his or her school's choir. This is a wonderful opportunity for students who love to sing more challenging music.

If your child is interested, please read the letter below and click the link to print out an Intent to Audition form.

Northwest Children's Chorus 2018-2019

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

We are very excited to present an opportunity for your child to dive deeper into musical learning. The Northwest Children’s Chorus is an elementary choir featuring fifth grade students from all across NISD. We are excited to have Jennifer McKee as our invited conductor this year. Mrs. McKee earned her bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of North Texas and a master’s degree in choral music education from Florida State University. She has previously taught in Lovejoy ISD, Plano ISD, and Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD as a choral director. Choirs under her direction are consistent recipients of UIL Sweepstakes awards and have been recognized as “outstanding” and “best in class” at choral festivals in the DFW area. She has also been a guest conductor for All-Region Choirs in Texas.

This is a time commitment for students and their parents, and we ask that you consider it carefully as only a certain number of participants will be chosen. Students who do not fulfill their commitment may keep another student from the opportunity to participate in the choir.

How Are Students Selected?

  • Auditions will be held at each child’s respective elementary school. The audition will consist of material learned in class.Extra help for students can be arranged if needed.
  • Each campus choir director will determine campus audition dates before October 17th.
  • Auditions will be audio recorded and turned in by the music teacher on October 17th and judging will be completed by October 31st.
  • Students/parents will be notified of the results by November 2nd.
  • Auditions will consist of singing the first verse of “America,” reading short rhythmic patterns and singing short melodic patterns.
  • Students must turn in the Intent to Audition form signed by a parent/guardian in order to audition.
  • A recommendation form from the student’s classroom teacher and music teacher will be submitted by their music teacher along with their audition recording.

  • Expectations if my child is chosen:
  • Attend parent meeting from 9:00-9:30 a.m. and the first rehearsal from 9:30-noon on Saturday, January 12, 2019.
  • Attend all weekly rehearsals on Thursday evenings from 5:30-7:00 p.m. beginning January 17, 2019 through May 2, 2019 and two Monday rehearsals in February due to a conflict with a district-wide event on Thursday.
  • Students will only be allowed two excused or unexcused absences in order to remain a part of the chorus. (Arriving late or leaving early will add up to absences.)
  • Participate in dress rehearsal on Monday, April 29th, concert on Friday, May 3, 2019 and various other concert opportunities that may arise.
  • Rehearsals will be held at Clara Love Elementary (off of HWY 114 in Harriett Creek subdivision).
  • Transportation to and from rehearsals will be the responsibility of the student’s parent/guardian.
  • Students must participate in their campus choir for the full performing year.
  • Students must have good citizenship and maintain academic eligibility with passing grades in all subjects.
  • Pay $25 fee for t-shirt and supplies at January 12th parent meeting.

Should you have any questions, please contact your child’s music teacher.

If you would like your child to audition, please fill out the Intent to Audition form and return it to your music teacher no later than September 28, 2018. Please note that each school is limited in the number of spots for the children’s chorus and that not all students who audition will be chosen.

Sincerely,

The Northwest ISD Elementary Music Teachers
